Right, quad core is a new technology that has four cores (processors) instead of two, so theoretically it could be twice as powerful, although you will probably only notice when running high end apps. Since you're talking about doing 3D and video you'll probably notice a performance improvement in those environments, so if you plan to spend a lot of time doing that stuff it might be a good investment.
