    Ok, try this.
    • At the chime, hold down Command+s until the screen goes black. It'll go all Matrixy but eventually come to a stop (at a prompt)
    • Type: 'fsck -y -f' (including the spaces). It will begin a file system check which may take a while.
    • When it is finished it will either say the filesystem was okay or was modified. If it's okay, type 'exit' to boot the machine (it will do some more Matrix stuff as it does so). If it was modified, type 'fsck -y -f' again to recheck the filesystem. Once done, type 'exit' to boot.

    This is basically running Disk Utility but I've had more success doing this than running it of the install DVD in the past.
