Sorry, I just found this thread while looking for something else. I don't think the issue was to open up the 'ff' but to convert it to ligatures. Look at the way the letters interact with each other here...
I agree with the italicized 'ff' though, or something along those lines, the logo needs something to give itself purpose. I preferred the version with all the joined letters, there's no point joining only two.
Still, great work so far, love the type!
- I'd be more inclined to close up the space between the 'ff' instead of opening them up.5timuli
