I have the ESX-1 and it rocks. The thing about the electribe series is there's a unique sound you get out of them, they have a special character. . . they do a certain thing really well, and once you understand how it works, the creative process with it feels really cool. The MPC is def. more of a powerhouse, all around, do anything and everything machine. . . but doesnt necessarily have the tube warmth and analog character. I recommend playing with all the drum machines at guitar center or wherever for an EXTENDED period before deciding.
p.s. like the MPC, you can sample and/or load sample files from the 808 or anywhere else, including resampling the output of the sampler itself to layer effects and sounds, etc.
