I have got some nice results with using alpah faded pngs, but if you just want a nice faded shadow, a quick way is just to put your shadow under the object, with say, and alpha of 25, then, with it selected, go into Modify/Shape/Soften fill edges, and select, say 6 and 6..gives the edges a nice fade :)..
