    He still has a day job, but they tour alot and he makes money. Not enough that he can quit his day job (he owns his own company there as well though), but they cover tour expenses, can pay their crew, etc. + Tshirt sales and other merchandising helps. And death metal is a pretty tiny, but steady niche and they have a following. They've also been doing for 20 years and know the business side inside and out pretty much. I know guys in more mainstream indy bands have a different structure, but these days but you can always make money touring if you're smart...
