Nothing wrong with using an iMac. Try some or all of the following:
• Try Going to Applications> Utilities> Disk Utility and repairing permissions from the first aid tab.
• Check how much space you have free on your hard drive, the more intense the load you are putting on the machine the more disk space it will need to use for additional memory.
• Free up some RAM by quitting programmes you don't need open, including dashboard widgets.
• Run Software Update from the Apple menu to check your OS is up to date.
• If you have lots of files on your desktop consider moving them off as OS X treats each file as its own window. The more files you have on there the more RAM/graphics processing power will be used displaying them (especially as the desktop is the one Finder window that is always in view regardless of what you are doing).Hope this helps.
