How about being able to (permanently) 'collapse' posts by some people, rather than ignoring their posts? (it would just be a half-height post, enough to show their name and a link to expand the post)
(The new layout shows everyones posts expanded... whereas in the old site you could choose to click on the names of the people who you thought might have something interesting to say). Collapsing posts would get around the problem of conversations being weird when you have a lot of people ignored...
