    part of your problem is the way you are painting. Ideally you want to work from light to dark, so you aren't trying to cover thosedark areas with a light color.

    But if you must go over darks with whites for the effect you are trying to achieve, make sure the underlying paint is completely dry. Then go over with thick undiluted paint. Other than that see if there is a medium you can mix with the paint to make it more opaque.
