They don't seem to be using this thing with the type treatment anywhere that I can see on the site.
It makes me wonder (hope) that they released this horrible looking thing in order to get a wack of designers to the site to check out this abomination (and products) before they cease to use it and go with just the wordmark.

Interesting point. Id actually commend them if that were the case. The thing is, they can still easily lose it after the bad response and claim that was the plan from the beginning.
I do like the typeface
