yeah, use font explorer, can't beat the price. if you put that many fonts in fontbook, they'll all load up at startup, totally bogging your system down. font book is the pits for font management, especially if you have to activate fonts frequently.
Just think, if you have 1500 fonts loaded in, every time you click on a pulldown menu that contains font names, your computer has to display all 1500, and if you have it set to display styles, you'll be rendering out 1500 fonts and that sucks some serious memory.
