  Select object.

  Open tool palette:
  Window > Gradient

  Set Type to Linear

  Select Gradient tool:
  Press G

  Use tool on object to change direction, etc.

  If you want to change colours - set them in your swatch, then drag them onto your Gradient Slider in the Gradient Tools Palette.

  If you want transparency..
