I've found that it's good to get your name/folio on the books of decent recruitment agencies and make it known you're looking for freelance/short term contract work not full time.

Also, make the most of all of your contacts and creative friends and let them know you're on the market and what you can do, when you're available etc.

I've only been freelancing since the start of the year and found it's been going quite slow intitially but is now picking up and getting repeat work from agencies and more clients approaching directly based on recommendation etc.

You might want to check out http://www.freelanceswitch.com/ it's a useful blog site with lots of good tips on working for yourself.

Make no mistake though, the first year for most freelancers is difficult if you're not taking clients with you from a full time position. Good luck!
