i recently learned that mixed drinks became popular during the prohibition because there was so much liquor being made with whatever chemicals the brewers could get their hands on .. to ensure the drinker got a buzz.
and since turpentine doesn't go down that smoothly the bartenders would mix it with juices.
a lot of people died of poisoning because of it.
