    Frankly, I think it's difficult to overestimate how expensive the bay area is.

    It's all relative. Having lived in Mtn. View, Palo Alto and Redwood City for a total of about 7 years, it was still a shock to the system to move to Edinburgh. It's a smallish city, but cost of living here is easily higher than living in the Bay Area.

    Yes - it's expensive compared to most of the rest of the US, but on a global scale, it's really not that bad.
