i know what you mean. it all depends on your climate and location of the trees. moving from house to house i've found out the hard way. another nice (and cheap) way to experiment is to buy trees or shrubs from the hardware store - look for cool root/branch structures. with a little trimming, wire and repotting you can turn a $15 tree into a $200 one. if it dies, it won't hurt as much. btw, none of my trees were very expensive.
