Everyone got the answer before me, but here's my explanation anyway.
There is an easier way that isn't hard at all.
Create outlines
Stroke it twice as much as you want the inset to be (Illustrator strokes on the center by default)
Stroke path
Delete the outside parts. Keep the inside parts.
Go outside and enjoy the heat of a newly, environmentally fixed planet before it remembers to rain on my sad ass.
