I like to make it clear when a relationship is over, particularly because I don't want to lead anyone on (despite what friends may say about trying it out again or that "he's a really nice guy").
I think it's important to have that straight-forward communication, even if it doesn't happen that often in some relationships. It's good that you talked to her about it, and it seems that she understands somewhat.
