this is going to sound naive, but we just write a letter of intent which includes this phrase "Our usual method is to commence work upon receipt of an advance of 50% of the project fee, with the remainder plus reimbursables billed upon delivery of mechanicals to the printer. This advance serves as a kill fee in the event one is needed."
