    The multiply/screen method does not work on all occasions.

    The solution is simple:

    draw a shape with the color you want.

    make another shape with a gray scale gradient over it.

    In the appearance palette, select "make opacity map"

    presto.

    It would be nice if you could just set alpha values to colors, though.

    oh waitasec..

    can't you fill say a square with the solid tint you want used in the gradient then create a black and white gradient above that in either the same shape aor whatever shape you want to and use that to create an opacity mask? then that solid tint by default becomes a gradient.. it should have transparency?
