I don't think it was that difficult to read, nor do I think you are off to a bad start. Your concept works actually, but your execution is only just starting. Try blending those shapes a bit more tho. For example, as it is now, you have the top arches of both the 'b' and the 'd' as separate shapes... try blending them with their coresponding stems. It may be more pleasing, and more cohesive.
