    I usually convert the drawing to greyscale, go to the grey channel, ctrl+alt click. That selects your artwork and gets pretty much all the fine detail. Then create a layer underneath and cut from your artwork layer.

    Ah! I think this is what I was looking for. Totally forgot about channels...

    Not sure about the other methods mentioned, but I'll test it out.
