i mailed another nt'er here a couple of weeks ago that was asking the same thing...here is what i sent him. hopefully this will help you out a bit :)

anyway, santa monica in it of itself is nice. i'm sure you will check out 3rd st. prominade (some cool stores...but a lot of what you have already seen in other cities). I would say if you are mobile, it would def. be a wise choice to drive up pch to malibu. the beaches are really nice(the ones you can get to ie. zuma and a couple others) and the canyon drives ( topenga and malibu) in malibu are awesome! if you take mullholand highway from pch that is also great. and there is this weird little cactus park that has these huge variations of cactus (small/weird but very cool). that will bring you all the way to mullholand drive in the hollywood hills if you follow it for a long ways (wicked views of all of hollywood and downtown la) as well as some ridiculous houses.

also, go to the melrose area for clothes (i put in wasteland for the search becuase that is sort of the middle of a ton of shops) http://maps.google.com/maps?f=l&…

also if you head south past the wasteland i use to live and go to laguna beach. lots of nice scenery. little shops. good sushi ( http://maps.google.com/maps?f=l&…) lot's of plastic people but like that's a shock :)
and there is also fashion island http://maps.google.com/maps?f=l&…

and much more design oriented, but smaller (only about 10 shops, but all good stuff) the anti-mall/the lab http://www.thelab.com/ and the camp (other side of the street more geared towards outdoor adventure stuff http://maps.google.com/maps?f=l&…
