I'd say this holds true for good speakers. Amps get old - find me a 20 year old amp that supports 5.1 - amps improve every year with better chips and capabilities.

- they actually 'allowed' the manufac's to make 3-channel amps
- they would not overheat...ever
- they are tough (shell, form factor)
- they have high quality inputs for speakers (100% gold)
- they look bad ass ;)
