I'd say this holds true for good speakers. Amps get old - find me a 20 year old amp that supports 5.1 - amps improve every year with better chips and capabilities.

(Mar 20 07, 08:49)if we're talking about integrated pre and amp, sure, but the analog part of the amp hasn't changed much. i use older stereo and mono amps to make 5 channels, and a separate surround pre that i've upgraded a few times.
