Actually, (..and, dependent on what kind of file you're using - this doesn't really apply to vector data documents) I'd probably create a Merged-Copy of the original document, then follow the first series of steps - you shouldn't (well, I wouldn't) really have asset-data outside the workspace for a file going to print (imo).
