  aha, so you have assets in your workspace which run outside your document size? d'oh, i forgot about that.

  in that case...

  - Create new layer at very top of document.
  - Fill with foreground colour (white).
  - *follow steps mentioned previously*
  - Create new layer at very top of document.
  - Fill with black
  - Ctrl-click first, white, layer to select contents.
  - Click on black-filled layer in Layers menu.
  - Press Delete.
  - Delete white layer

  That make sense?
