Nothing wrong with Art institutes or colleges. In fact many of the best deign programs are located in art schools.
Art Center and CalArts have good programs out in Cali. Good foundations as well as contemporary foresight.
In regards to schools in general, I always advise finding a conceptual school. The difference being that some schools are more technical and some are conceptual. You can always learn programs and such on your own. The real benefits of a degree program are in the conceptual tools and ideas, in my opinion.
