he's obviously speaking about some genuinely important issues, but what is he offering that hasn't already been said?

As for questions he raises? There are lots - not going to go back and find them - but I will say that the impression I got from the article is that he's NOT really trying to insult designers - just trying to make people expand their definition of what design is and what it can and should do.
He's not really speaking to the designers of imagery and style but to the designers that think about things on a deeper level . The problem solvers, communicators, innovators, business leaders.
He does say some things that I'm at odds with - but over all I think his view is correct.
Maybe Bruce Mau is better at this type of comment, though.
