jaline, its nameservers with your registrar.
i have domains on mylanders and mt servers. i could put them all on one or the other but why?
here's how i do it though.
buy from godaddy, set nameserver during purchase. then I head over to mt and use my handy dandy add domain thingy.if i'm hosting it on mylanders, there's a little more work to do.
but
consider your website a box of stuff
well to get us all to look at your box of stuff, the nameserver has to be set for that box, if its not we'll never see it (Server not found). and if the box isn't there but the nameserver is set, 404 or no access to this server.
the nameserver is saying "hey for this domain, look at that 'box' there" so once you upload to your DH servers you will be using their bandwidth, and your old files even if you do not delete them will no longer be seen once the propagation has occurred
this is why during my migration, none of my sites went down. they are just cloned to the new server and the nameservers set.
once the name server takes effect it's no longer looking in that 'box' but this one instead
i hope that made sense
