  Let's not forget that 2000-2003 the economy was in the dumps, there were a lot of designers out of work (who therefore had a bunch of time on their hands, and nothing better to do with that time than show off)

  There's no lack of talent coming up, it's just more jobs are picking that talent up. Combine that with the seasoned pros doing one-pagers and the up-n-comers seeing that as a benchmark for success, so they replicate it.

  If the industry falters again, I wouldn't be surprised to see a resurgance of wizz-bang flash sites.
