I am a professional editor and I use AVID and FINAL CUT. I would recommend using FINAL CUT as it is cheap as chips and does loads of things, unfortunatly it also has major stability issues when you are doing intensive edits with many built in and 3rd party products. I also would point out that a "cut is a cut" so no editing program can actually do simple editing better than another. Have a look at AVID DV PRO as well, I would have to say it is a very robust system and the news cutter and trim feature outperforms final cut supremely.
