too grungy for a stylist's site. the colors are garish and the type is too aggressive for the work being shown.
use some textiles instead of the print patterns and ornaments. make it like a nicely layered outfit instead of a flat website. give it some visual weight and depth.
and also, yor comment about people not treating what appears to be the navigation as the navigation, and rather contents, is completely off base due to the fact that is the area the navigation occupies in roughly more than half of the sites on the internet. it's a site, not a book or magazine.
