frank lloyd wright once said, an architect with out a client not an architect.
Can a designer be a designer with out clients? If your purpose was to create something that had no boundaries except your own, would you be an artist?
One of the most challenging project for a designer is when they are forced up on to create beautiful things that convey message or theme with boundaries set by others including style and thought.
Great designers has a style of their own but the constantly create new ones for the clients.
