I send large format signs (usually 4'x8') at full size and no more than 150 dpi.
Be careful talking with the printer. Most I have talked with ask for 300dpi, but they aren't used to printing bitmaps that large.
Sometimes they'll just print the bitmap, cut the letters, and then put it all together on one board. This is for construction sites and outdoor areas.
Paper will make a huge difference, too, so make sure you know how they'll be printing.
There's a huge difference between vinyl and photo paper, but both can be put outside on a sign.
