imo, i'd be settling on a font choice soon as it is already having an affect on how your logoform should look.
With this font, for instance, i'd make the logo less hard, less straight and rigid - basically, more handdrawn looking.
If, however, you moved to something like a rounded san-serif, the cleanliness of your logo wouldn't jar so much.
Personally, I see it as a box - not as a veil or anything, the shading makes that quite clear.
I'm wondering - are his earlobes hurting, squeezed in there like that? :)
