I think you still need IE on the machine to switch to it using the firefox extension though.
You might want to check out www.browsercam.com which I've had to use in the past for checking in IE on mac.
I'm sure there are ways to get IE6 running on mac but they don't look particularly user friendly.
Isn't safari quite close to IE in terms of rendering pages?
