well if you can't use a tripod and/or the subject is in motion you could definitly try the underexpose option, rather then turning up the ISO. Any digital camera gets pretty shitty results above ISO 400, IMHO.
yes, you may loose detail in the shadows, but play with the contrast to use this in your advantage. (ie make it a style).
this is interesting to apply to concert photography for instance.
