I lost all my music and photos from over a four year (college!) period a few months back. the data recovery people weren't able to retrieve anything but thats not the point–I told them I was a student, not a company, poor, etc and could not afford their standard price. They gave me quiet a bit off the regular price though I was never charged because they weren't able to retrieve anything (I tried freezing, dropping, swapping drives which I'm sure didn't help after a while).
