That did it! THe secret was to save it as an Illustrator 8.0 file, which is kinda dumb on Maxon's part. But it works. Thanks a bunch djurizen! (BTW I didn't need to use the browser import feature. Opening it from the main File menu works.
Blackspade: C4D is a great program. For me the hardest part is to figure out the best way of building something (sometimes there is more than one way). So far I am just modeling small things. Didn't get into animation yet.
