Nairn, without knowing much about a company it's almost impossible to judge a logo.

I assumed that this was a smallish publishing company. Small companies need memorable logos which tell you something about what they do.

There are many companies with the intials 'BP' (including one very famous one) I don't think company initials are ever a good basis for a logo, it usually doesn't add anything to the logo type.

A quick look on google will show you that many companies with the initals BP have come up with various ways of incorporating the two letters, which is a good example of why it shouldn't be done yet again. A logo should reflect what the company does, offers or stands for. The intials BP tell the viewer nothing about the company and aren't memorable:

If this is the Bay Publishing the logo is for:
    http://www.baypublishing.com/

then maybe the logo should convey that they design travel based literature.

It's fine for large corporations to do other things with their identity because it can be implemented in different ways and over a much larger scale so it enters the user's consciousness in a more slow-release way. Smaller companies sometimes need a more literal, one-off hit.
