I also have the 6x9 Intuos and absolutely can't live without it.
Like others have said, you can siwtch between your mouse and tablet depending on the task. I don't find it hard at all to do precise things, it just takes some getting used to. I think the ones that are smaller than 6x9 take a little getting used to as the screen to tablet ratio is quite different. I have a 21" monitor and use a 6x9 and I think they work well together. When I upgrade to a 24" widescreen lcd I'll also purchase the wider tablet to accomodate.
I too like the older pens without the rubber grip. The rubber grip seems to come loose after age and I find them too thick.
