The disconnect here is that we are so egocentric and materialistic that we believe all human beings somehow must want the same things as we do: a job, a house, a decent and peaceful life. Those who defy this logic must be crazy. We believe they want to slaughter us because we refuse to "address their grievances". As soon as we change our policies their anger will disapate and we can get back to our quiet lives.

On one level, this view optimistally presumes there is a finite number of "grievances" to be addressed that will assuage those who would kill us. The only way to discover whether this avenue is the one to take is to go down it and see where it takes you. But beware. History shows it is a very dangerous road to travel.

On another level, and this is where rationalism fails and one is forced to deal with the metaphysical dilemma that what you are dealing with cannot be placated with material concessions but is, in fact, a manifestation of fanatism; an irrationality. A totalitarian ideology that demands complete obedience not only materially, but spiritually as well.

If this is the case, then we must have the courage to look evil in the face and deal with accordingly while not losing our soul in the process.
