I think it depends on who you are. Some people can bust out a suit and make it look like the coolest thing ever. Some people really do need to come with some clean pants, a nice t, some really crisp jeans and a cartigan. I like the cartigan look. It's something that a producer or CD can bring an AD along to a big client meeting as the "Creative guy repping the team and the culture at the office". Even clients like to see that.
