    Look, we SHOULD have taken Saddam out in '91. Saddam was a bad guy, but he was OUR bad guy for a while, and then he wasn't, but it was a differnet political era/context. Saddam made many stupid political errors in judgement, and crossing the US was one of them. It was pure power politics.

    Morality and politics make strange bedfellows. Open to interpretation and history really. You take your chances as they come up, and they don't always work out. But you got to be smart enouigh to know when to cut your loses, which is something Americans have been horrible at since 1956.

    This recent invasion of Iraq had nothing to do with Saddam crossing the US or with WMD's (or very little to do with it). It had to do with factions within the US goerntment/policy beauracracy (read neocons) trying out a new foreign policy doctrine based on half-thought out ideas in the context of a post 9/11 opportunity.

    Afghanistan was the right war at the right time in response to 9-11. But that was brushed aside to try and fulfill a policy objective of making the "US the number one superpower" for an indeterminate period of time. Well, we all know about the plans of mice and men...
