Actually, they are faster except for one fact. They run programs in Emulation mode. So pretty much you need to wait till Adobe and all those companies release software that has been made for the new chipset.
Right now photoshop actually runs slower on a new macbook than on an old G4 laptop. But when photoshop is released for the Macbook chipset, it will be much much faster than even the G5s.
