Never lived there longer than a week, that's probably what keeps me thinking it's the best city in the world :)
As for Spanish.. Obviously, the better, the bigger your chances are. I wouldn't try to move there with no Spanish. Just some two weeks ago Crouwel complained nobody spoke English in bcn. On the other hand, I've seen Americans use it in a way that looked fluent to me after 8 months of going to school, in Valencia, so it should come easy to you. Especially, that people there neither ever shut up nor let you stay mute ;)
