Basically you bring a track in and 'artwork' it effectively - telling the computer that a sound is a beat and apply it to the rest of the trac. The application then splits up teh track into sections and beats and bars and whatnot, so you can just slice it up in ableton and build a track up – if you've ever used after effects or flash, it works this way, but with audio tracks as layers. The controls are similar to after effects, where you assign effects to different tracks and control volumes etc. Itr's really easy to use in this way to make mixes but when you do a live show you use it more spontaneaously, making koops and using it with a proper mixer.
