why on earth would you support their rights as parents without supporting their rights as partners?

being their child's godfather doesn't mean I support the notion of them being parents. It just means I care about the welfare of their kid and care enough about my friends in order to look after said kid.

yes, but being unified and having children are really closely tied together, at least in our culture. Being a godfather suggests that you agree with their decision because you are also a form of a guardian, putting you at the same level as the parents.
