just because you wrap a lie in a pretty package does not change the fact that what you are selling is overpriced crap
why do you think gov sites look like ass?
because all they care about is the info
design is a self-important business that requires the massaging of ones and others egos
don't get me wrong, i do it too, but i don't sit on a high horse to work.

Not all clients are selling lies. Most are, but not all. My studio is privileged to have a few clients that are pretty honest with the way they wish to present themselves through design.
I agree that most of what I do is meaningless, often fluff, though if a client has a cause I find interesting, I find fulfilment in being able to help get them noticed and understood. I might not be solving world hunger, but a good portion of the work I produce has at least some value to a number of people.
There have also been a few times when I designed something that had a profound effect on someone; for example, my fiancee loves what I'm doing with our wedding invitations, and when I proposed I gave her something unique that I'd designed for her, which brought her to tears (in a good way, of course :).
Times like what I mentioned above are what keep me going in this business and allow me to sleep soundly at night.
